A little Duckwall history: John Duckwall, namesake

A little Duckwall history:
John Duckwall, namesake and son of Duckwall Fruit’s founder, was known by his family as simply “Uncle Johnny.” He was loved by all for his kind demeaner and soft-spoken nature, and he loved Duckwall Fruit. After a long 47-year working history, Uncle Johnny enjoyed a blessed 24 years of retirement. To Uncle Johnny and a life well lived.
Fun Fact: Uncle Johnny’s favorite restaurant was Bette’s Place in downtown Hood River, where he had a reserved seat at the counter for two meals every day.

Duckwall Fruit is proudly sponsoring the Hood River Education Foundation by helping bring Dionne Warwick @therealdionnew to the Hood River Middle School Stage, Saturday April 13th. It is a great honor to be part of this event. The Hood River Education Foundation manages more than 45 scholarship funds that make awards to graduating seniors and college students. To date, over 850 students have received a total of nearly $1.2 million through the Hood River County Education Foundation. The Education Foundation, without a doubt, helps further education more feasible for so many students in our community.

This might look like boxes stacked up for the second trip, but to us this is very important and special. For over 20 years Duckwall Fruit employees have sponsored Christmas families over the holiday season. It is something we feel very passionate about......helping others, supporting our community. We reach out to our local schools and ask "what can we do" they respond with Christmas families and wish lists. We gather money, purchase things off the wish list, and keep going. It isn't about who's been "naughty or nice" it's about giving back, supporting, and making families smile. We always strive to "Pay our dues for the space we occupy in our Community and Industry.” This tradition will continue! It seems to get better every year. Thank you everyone who helped support this great cause.

What do Pears and cows have in common? The person sitting to the right. That is Maurice Protzen, Vice President of Grant J. Hunt Company. We refer to him as our partner that is number one in our hearts. With an over 30-year relationship with Duckwall Fruit, he has earned that title repeatedly….as seasons change, Mo has not, he has been a constant steady we enjoy chatting with multiple times a day.
